And what of boudoirs in bathrooms?

sred-kitty wrote in saying she was keen on creating a boudoir in her bathroom... what a great idea for those who can't afford much space elsewhere! I thought it would be fun to gather some inspiration and add some ideas/thoughts:

The easiest way to create a boudoir-experience upon entering your bathroom is, of course, to paint the whole room in some totally different, totally fantasy, totally unexpected colour:

go for a lush magenta

or a bright cherry yellow

Tip:
Make sure you actually look good surrounded in that colour + lighting! Some of us just don't look good in/around yellow (especially if your complexion has tones of pale green/blue)... if you're more on the ruddy side, a pink/red/purple room will do you NO wonders. How to decide? Visit a paper store along with a large mirror (not compact sized). Ask a store assistant to hold the mirror while you hold two pieces of paper of your favourite colour choices on either side of your face. Walk around and see your reflection in different lights (sun, halogen, incandescent). Hey you will look silly, but at least you'll give said store assistant a story to tell ;) and your efforts will repay itself in a bathroom that will reflect the best in you.

or super gloss, almost mirror finish aqua

or gloss pink

I love chandeliers in surprising spots (got one in Hannah's room!)... where more surprising than in a bathroom? LIke the purple one above?

even love it more when the chandelier is hanging low.

Furnishing it with exquisite mirrors, chairs and shelving. Don't you like the charm of the simple, white shelving above? Perfect place to show off gorgeous bottles and soaps. Instead of going all white tones like the one above, what about going jewel like what I did in my small restroom?

I love the oversized mirror here. Ornate and pretty and very girly. And oh to have the luxury of a pretty chair!

Don't you love the small chic painted ballerina in that corner? Or you can go super large, like the one below:

Painting the bathtub also instantly adds appeal and beauty to a space that normally isn't large enough for extra pieces of furniture. Tangerine? Lime green? Cheery yellow?

Bringing in some bling into the bathroom boudoir is a must. Check out this extravagant mirror!

I love how the sharp lines of the mirror exudes a bling and formality that is dressed down by the warm red tones of the cabinet.

Or go totally formal in feeling.. yet still totally feminine:

What about wallpaper? Easy way to add instant "ooh-ness" to a normally plain, oft-neglected space...

A more dramatic feel... punchy.

A softer feel...

And I have to add one of my favourite wallpapers here from Thibaut.

Btw, while I love love love wallpaper in here, not too sure about it with all the moistness in the air!

So maybe tiling?

Of course, any Bisazza job is luxury in itself!

Fun, fun, fun! Wish I had the budget, let's see what you do sred-kitty! Let us know :)

What type of boudoir are you?

the Beach Studios

It's been a lovely lovely rainy weekend (we need it). And as always, my thoughts turn inward: who am I? And on my head is the topic of dressing tables/boudoirs.

We all need a spot to place our beauty jars, perfumes, pretty hair things, brooches, rings, earrings, nail polish.

Daron Chatz

And depending on our lifestyle and personality, we all need different "boudoirs"... (i.e. dressing tables).

Some of us need a pretty with capital P (and capital P for price)

Now defunct Domino

others need a simple furniture piece

others yet demand for drawers and drawers
some of those need their stuff spilling out those drawers and drawers

James Tse

others like their drawers but like their surfaces clear.

Some of us who can afford it like a dedicated dressing alcove...

Madeline Stuart

Some of us who choose to splurge on a luxurious dressing table and place it next to the bed...

Some of us like it in the bathroom!

I'm not talking presentation (i.e. colour, finish) but the style or type of boudoir-ing one needs to put on one's face in the morning.

While I would LOVE to be the sit-down-and-pretty-up-in-a-nice-dedicated-table-on-a-yellow-and-white-stool-type... I realise I'm not that type.

I'm more the simple type. The hoarder type. hehe
The stand up at my boudoir and throw stuff on and rush out the door type.

But I still like a pretty space.

So I repurposed a pretty white cabinet I got off eBay 2 years ago that used to be my craft cabinet and then bookcase.

A white cabinet much like the one in this gorgeous bedroom...

One day I might become a sit down one... like at Miss Pettigrew... but for now... this cupboard will do me just fine. (Pardon the super bright blue... t'will become a lovely watermelon soon.)

Reading corners

Alongside the need to get an alphabet poster for Hannah now, it's also time to set into motion a plan I've had from the day she was born...

A Reading Corner!

I blogged about the above reading nook space way back and the image has been seared into my brain... but no corners behind our doors to create a private, magical world for her escapes up the Faraway Tree. And she's too young to want to read on her own for hours like I remember doing when I was about 7.

So I Flickr-ed for inspiration....

Or you can go all out and create a special (expensive project) for your precious ones, like what Flickr: frecklesreggie did:

But with a budget of $0.00, I wanted to create a special place for her in our study. Previously her Step 2 table just kinda sat nowhere. After sleeping on the idea for 2 days, working out placements and trying out one other arrangement, I hit on an idea which I put into place last night and am reasonably happy with it. I dragged out her bookcase from her bedroom (she only ventures in there to sleep) and stole her foam sofa from the living/TV area (gotta replace it with something else)...

Before: (quite an old shot)

After:

She's outgrowing that table, so I'd really like to get her a desk... but the table's nice for when her friends come, although that's not frequent... Anyone got a secondhand/used Step 2 Master Activity Desk to sell? (I'm in Melbourne, Australia...)

Update since writing this: The next morning, the first thing Hannah did was drag that foam sofa out back to the TV area... which was okay since I'd just scored an Ikea Egg chair... and I like the look of it now :) Also dragged out an Ikea lamp from the recesses of our storage...

What about a bright round rug huh?

Mouses in childrens books...

Hope you had a good weekend! Ours was relaxing and then busybusybusy!

Scanned from Autumn Story, Brambly Hedge by Jill Barklem.

I can't help it. It started around 1995. I blame Brambly Hedge for this malady.

Malady: I LOVE vintage books on mouses and their houses.

Cure: Collect them!

I wrote about my absolute treasure and favourite, House by Mouse (Also known as Need a house? Call Ms Mouse in the US) by George Mendoza. Discovered in 2007 at a Salvos for $1.99.

But here are others in my small collection:

What books do you collect?
