DIY Project: Cane chair

I have a cane and wooden chair that I love. It's my office chair at the moment. The poor shabby thing was picked up at my fav junk shop for $15 almost a year ago. I'd love to give it a makeover but am unsure how to...

My dilemmas:

1. How would you suggest I cover up/shield the cane area so paint won't get onto it?

2. Would you rather spray paint or use a brush?

3. Colour suggestions? At the moment, I'm tending towards gloss black over the black areas (and that's it) or spray paint the whole chair and pop a cool chairpad on the seat, like this chair in one of my favourite home office spaces.

Thanks in advance for help!

I'm interested to see the feedback/suggestions you get on this project...I have my eye on some very similar bentwood cane chairs but am not in love with the wood colour....Personally, I love the high gloss black paint with the cane showing...or with a cool seat cushion in fab fabric.

I like the idea of painting it all a gloss black and adding a chair pad. That way, you can always recover the pad if you want to change your decor. Plus, the pad will probably a bit more comfortable to sit on too.

Yeah gloss black all over.

Although, that shabby look does give it a vintage feel!

black would be sleek. but what if you used like a dark teal...or a lighter aqua? i also think red would be lovely! then again who am I to talk... i recently painted some old second hand furniture all black. either way i'm excited to see what you do with it! i love that style of chair!

ps. i'd use masking tape to control your paint, and i'd use brush on paint. i learned through a wise woman at Home Depot that when you spray paint furniture you have to use a lot more than if you were to just brush it on. i hope that helps!

ashley: thanks for your comment and advice :) since my study is planned to be a white, black and yellow confection, teal and red would be out. although, i'd LOVE to do that in other rooms :)

the thing with this chair, if you have a close look at the area where the cane meets the frame... it's almost impossible to keep the cane bits unpainted and the frame freshly painted black...

so i think: ALL black or leave as is.

Audrey I'm a little bit late to the conversation but you're right when you say that you can't shield the cane in order to get at the little bits of chair frame underneath. The only way to do that is to strip the cane completely then recane and OMG why would you bother. I did try to recane a few broken seated Thonet chairs I had once but 3 years later I finally threw out the caning supplies and gave the chairs away unfinished. I think your best solution is to paint them allover and have a stunning cushion. For an extra special touch you could have the fabric monogrammed at one of those embroidery places then make it uo into the base cushion. Like this this.

Should also spell check before I push publish :)

I am in the same situation! I found three of these guys, more badly damaged in wood finish. I investigated how much it would cost to have them recaned. $400 for bottom or top! I am going to try doing it myself. I like BLACK BTW. I say just retouch the worn spots, unscrew the arms from the frame
